Geometries file
The geometries file is a computer-aided design (CAD) or mesh file defining a structure that can be imported by FDTD++.
Below discusses details on creating this file as well as a list of the supported file formats.
Note that the Section Computer-aided design tutorials provides a number of tutorials on created a CAD/mesh file using the open source software SALOME.

Creating the file
The geometries file can be created by any computer-aided design or meshing software and named by any name. The recommended and supported software for this, however, is the open source software SALOME.
Supported file formats
A number of file formats are supported by FDTD++. The final format that is imported into FDTD++ must be in the I-DEAS UNV format, however. The CAD and mesh file formats listed below are all supported, however, as they can be easily converted to UNV format using the recommended CAD software SALOME.
Supported CAD formats
- ACIS (*.sat)
- BREP (*.brep)
- IGES (*.iges, *.igs)
- STEP (*.step, *.stp)
- STL (*.stl)
- Any other format that can be converted to one of the above
Supported mesh formats
- GMF (*.mesh, *.meshb)
- IDEAS (*.unv)
- MED (*.med)
- SAUV (*.sauv)
- STL (*.stl)
